Free weights include a component of versatility. They are more varied and creative.Free weights are particularly important in rehabilitation as they can be easily adapted in their use, direction and weight (resistance applied).
Free weights are more functional, in that they can be incorporated and trained into motions we perform in our daily life, such as sitting, bending and walking. This is important in rehabilitation as the aim is to generally gain strength and functionality in movements we perform in daily activities throughout the day.
Free weights also allow the whole body to be trained. By supporting one’s own body, both the large and smaller muscle groups will be used.
Free weights can however pose some risk when it comes to learning the exercises. Instruction from a trained professional is often needed and a degree of co-ordination and control has to implemented and learnt. Without the necessary guidance, the possibility of attaining an injury is increased. That is why is always important to have the assistance of a trained professional, such as a Biokineticist.
